Kho-kho is simple, inexpensive and enjoyable, but it does demand physical fitness, strength, speed and stamina. Dodging, feinting and bursts of controlled speed make it thrilling to watch.

Ranjan Shetty, an office superintendent with Western Railways, grew up in Navi Mumbai, where his life revolved around his local kho kho club. That’s where he learned to play a game that would change his life forever.

1. Satish Rai

Kho kho is one of the most popular traditional tag games in India. It is played in teams of 12 players. Nine players enter the field and sit on their knees (chasing team), while three extra players try to avoid being touched by members of the opposing team.

Satish Rai started playing kho kho as a child and became a professional player after the age of 18. He has won numerous tournaments and is considered to be one of the best kho kho players in the country.

Sarika Kale is a famous Indian kho kho player. She has won many medals in national and international competitions. She is currently the captain of the Indian women’s kho kho team. She has won 20 national championships, including Federation and Association national championships. She has also won several awards, including the Arjuna Award, Ekalavya Award, and Janaki award.

2. Sarika Kale

One of the top three famous Kho-Kho players in India, Pankaj Malhotra is an educated sportsman who has a gold medal to his name from an international five-match test series. Born in a village of Osmanabad district, Sarika Kale could only afford to buy one meal per day. However, she didn’t let that stop her from playing kho kho. She became the captain of the Maharashtra state kho-kho team in 2010 and led them to three national championships. She has also represented India at the 2016 South Asian Games. She has been the breadwinner of her family, which has a father who sells steel utensils in weekly bazaars and a grandmother who gets a pension of Rs. 9000 every month.

3. Mandakini Majhi

A native of Odisha, Mandakini Majhi grew up in a poor family and chose kho kho as her career because it was the only sport that provided her with financial stability. She started playing the game at a very young age, and has won several medals. She has also represented India at various national and international tournaments.

She became the captain of the Maharashtra women’s state kho-kho team in 2010, and has played in 25 national championships. In 2015, she was selected in the Indian Women’s national kho-kho team, and led them to victory at the 2016 South Asian Games.

Besides being one of the best players, Abhinandan is also a promoter of kho-kho, and believes that the new Ultimate Kho Kho League will make the game even more popular. Abhinandan also feels that more players should take up traditional Indian sports, like kho-kho and kabaddi.

4. Praveen Kumar

The former medium pacer had the qualities to become one of the biggest domestic cricket stars in India – limited pace, a smart application of it and the ability to bowl long spells. However, fitness problems and injury hampered his progress.

But Kho kho gave him back his passion. He has won several medals for Western Railways and represented the country at the 2016 South Asian Games.

The sport has also been a big part of Bollywood movies with Praveen Kumar making his debut in Tinnu Anand’s blockbuster Shahenshah. He also played the character of Mukktar Singh in the film. He is known for his punch dialogues and has a short fuse on the field, but is trying to improve that off it. He was recently a part of the Gujarat Lions team in the IPL.
